The New Intermodality Portal

This project was born from 40 years of commercial experience in the Italian transport sector and, more recently, from the creation of innovative tools such as interactive thematic maps — of which the portal can be seen as an evolution.

The initiative is especially the result of a valuable collaboration with engineer Eugenio Muzio, considered one of the founding fathers of intermodality in Italy. This partnership led to the idea of creating a unique tool to represent a sector — intermodal transport — that remains relatively unknown to those outside the industry. The first challenge was to determine where to position this platform and who its intended users would be. Then came the question of what content to include — or rather, imagining what kind of information these users would be seeking from such a tool.

To be honest, before even taking the first steps, we were advised to abandon the idea altogether.
“There are already many tools just like the one you want to build — perhaps even better — so it would be a waste of time, a pointless effort.”

But the evidence provided to support this argument failed to convince us. On the contrary, it confirmed that there was indeed room for something truly useful.

From the very beginning, however, it was clear to us that everything would depend on the content — on how well this Portal could deliver something new and different to its users.

A Clear Vision from the Start

We believe it is important to emphasize that this project was developed without the support or funding of any institution, organization, or association.

There were numerous — and at times unexpected — challenges to overcome, and the timeline proved to be much longer than initially planned. Some may have thought we got lost in the fog. But today, the satisfaction of having succeeded despite everything repays us for the effort it took to achieve our goal.

It is well known that EU directives on sustainable mobility call for a drastic shift of freight transport from road to rail and sea, outlining objectives that are still far from being met.

This means that, for various reasons, many transport companies have yet to begin incorporating intermodality into their operations.

New Intermodal Horizons

Genio, leveraging new AI technology, offers—for the first time—a way for road-only transport companies to explore the opportunities of intermodal logistics. At the same time, it enables companies already operating in the intermodal sector to assess new traffic routes and alternative options.

It does so by providing a unique and comprehensive representation of Intermodality in Europe, visualizing all the key elements that define it:

  • Intermodal terminal

  • Seaports

  • Freight villages (interporti)

  • Various types of rail lines

  • Major connections

  • Ro-Ro maritime routes

  • TEN-T corridors

  • And much more.

The Tangible Advantages of the Portal

In addition to dynamic data on rail connections (around 1,200 across 350 terminals in Europe) and Ro-Ro maritime lines (about 360 across 100 ports in Europe), Genio’s app includes the names of over 700 companies operating within intermodal facilities—available to users for B2B networking.

With new users of intermodal transport in mind, we have equipped the Portal with a dedicated helpdesk where users can submit questions on the topic of Intermodality directly to Genio.

Thanks to this platform, companies—especially those operating within intermodal hubs—can promote their services in their operational context. And for everyone, it becomes easier to find suppliers and customers aligned with their specific needs or interests.
