Handling of intermodal loading units
The terminal manages the handling of intermodal loading units between truck and train and vice versa, enabling the transfer of goods across different transport modes.
In intermodal transport, goods remain within the same loading unit or on the same road vehicle, while the mode of transport changes (e.g. road and rail). This system allows the use of multiple transport modes without directly handling the goods during transshipment operations.
The Mortara Intermodal Terminal is located in a strategic position at the intersection of the Mediterranean Corridor and the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, with direct connections to major Alpine crossings — Simplon, Gotthard, and Fréjus — as well as to the Terzo Valico route towards the Ligurian Sea.
The infrastructure features 3 tracks dedicated to loading and unloading operations and 4 electrified reception and departure tracks, allowing trains to arrive and depart directly using electric locomotives.
The terminal already complies with European standards for axle load and P/C80 profile and is prepared for track extensions up to 750 meters.
The intermodal area covers a total surface of 110,000 m², divided into different operational zones.
