The interview was conducted by Michele Marcolongo, editor of the <strong data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"682\">PortaleGenio<\/strong> blog, the new platform dedicated to freight movement through intermodality.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"834\"><strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"834\">1. <\/strong><strong data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"994\">Can you tell us a bit about your company and the sector in which you operate? How long have you been active in the market and what are your main services?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1307\">The Mortara Terminal was conceived in the late 1990s and became operational in 2008. After being connected to the RFI rail network in 2009, we had to manage the start-up phase, which was not easy for a private operator during the global crisis caused by the subprime collapse and the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1619\">Over the years, the terminal has established itself as a model of excellence in the services offered, to the point that in 2023, German operator <strong data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1470\">Kombiverkehr<\/strong> (one of the leading intermodal operators in Europe) decided to invest in the terminal\u2019s management company, creating <strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1618\">Kombi Terminal Mortara srl<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"2037\">We offer the classic services of an intermodal terminal, primarily transshipment of loading units between trucks and trains. However, we stand out for the speed of these operations: for us, an average of 15 minutes between entry and exit is standard, whereas in other terminals times can be measured in hours. We also pay meticulous attention to train loading, planning every single unit in advance with our clients.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2042\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2044\" data-end=\"2169\"><strong data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2169\">2. Can you explain what intermodal transport is and what its main advantages are over traditional transport methods?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2292\">Broadly speaking, <strong data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2213\">intermodal transport<\/strong> involves the use of two or more modes of transport\u2014for example, road-rail-sea.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2294\" data-end=\"2366\">More commonly, it refers to the <strong data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2365\">road-rail combined transport system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2602\">The core idea is that the loading unit travels the longest part of the journey by rail, and only the initial and final segments by road. What emerging technologies are transforming intermodal transport?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"3206\">Transshipment between trucks and trains is mainly carried out using <strong data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"2960\">gantry cranes<\/strong> (usually electric) or <strong data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3006\">rubber-tired cranes<\/strong> (reach stackers), typically diesel-powered. Over the years, crane engines have made great strides in reducing pollution, and recently, electric and hydrogen-powered reach stackers have begun testing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3208\" data-end=\"3521\">On the railcar side, progress has also been made: on one hand, railcars are being <strong data-start=\"3290\" data-end=\"3305\">specialized<\/strong> for different load types; on the other, they\u2019re becoming more <strong data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3381\">versatile<\/strong>. Environmental improvements have included <strong data-start=\"3424\" data-end=\"3448\">synthetic brake pads<\/strong>, which are less polluting and significantly quieter than cast iron ones.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3523\" data-end=\"3652\">In addition to traditional loading systems, <strong data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3599\">horizontal loading solutions<\/strong> are being developed for non-craneable semi-trailers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3875\">Another emerging topic is <strong data-start=\"3680\" data-end=\"3714\">refrigerated unit power supply<\/strong>. Freight trains typically lack electrical power, so maintaining temperature\u2014especially on long journeys\u2014is a key success factor for rail transport of this type.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3877\" data-end=\"3880\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3882\" data-end=\"3986\"><strong data-start=\"3887\" data-end=\"3986\">4. What are the main challenges intermodal transport faces today, and how can they be overcome?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3988\" data-end=\"4043\">Today, intermodal transport faces two major challenges:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4565\">\n<li data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4319\">\n<p data-start=\"4047\" data-end=\"4319\"><strong data-start=\"4047\" data-end=\"4071\">Rail service quality<\/strong>: Due to EU recovery funds, many rail networks have launched infrastructure works, causing <strong data-start=\"4162\" data-end=\"4186\">capacity constraints<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4188\" data-end=\"4205\">interruptions<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4207\" data-end=\"4217\">delays<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"4223\" data-end=\"4240\">cancellations<\/strong>, which affect the reliability that was once the key strength of intermodality.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4321\" data-end=\"4565\">\n<p data-start=\"4323\" data-end=\"4565\"><strong data-start=\"4323\" data-end=\"4339\">Energy costs<\/strong>: Driven by geopolitical instability (particularly the war in Ukraine), <strong data-start=\"4411\" data-end=\"4441\">rail traction energy costs<\/strong> have risen significantly. While they have partially decreased since the initial peaks, they remain above pre-crisis levels.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4567\" data-end=\"4671\">The combination of <strong data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"4602\">higher costs<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4607\" data-end=\"4630\">reduced reliability<\/strong> currently dampens the intermodal market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4673\" data-end=\"4937\">However, the <strong data-start=\"4686\" data-end=\"4730\">medium- to long-term outlook is positive<\/strong>. Infrastructure work will likely lead to increased capacity and improved overall performance of rail systems. Operators able to weather this period may benefit from a much more favorable future environment.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4939\" data-end=\"4942\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4944\" data-end=\"5029\"><strong data-start=\"4949\" data-end=\"5029\">5. How does intermodal transport contribute to environmental sustainability?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5031\" data-end=\"5258\"><strong data-start=\"5031\" data-end=\"5073\">Rail transport produces only about 10%<\/strong> of the CO\u2082 emissions compared to road transport. So, when the majority of the origin-to-destination journey is completed by rail, the <strong data-start=\"5208\" data-end=\"5242\">reduction in harmful emissions<\/strong> is substantial.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5260\" data-end=\"5263\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5265\" data-end=\"5373\"><strong data-start=\"5270\" data-end=\"5373\">6. What are the key factors to consider when choosing vehicles and routes for intermodal transport?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5375\" data-end=\"5520\">Typical loading units include <strong data-start=\"5405\" data-end=\"5478\">containers, tank containers, swap bodies, and craneable semi-trailers<\/strong>. One must also consider the <strong data-start=\"5665\" data-end=\"5711\">conditions offered by intermodal operators<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"5720\" data-end=\"5749\">availability of terminals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5752\" data-end=\"5755\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5757\" data-end=\"5848\"><strong data-start=\"5762\" data-end=\"5848\">7. Additionally, <strong data-start=\"5974\" data-end=\"6012\">intermodal transport avoids delays<\/strong> typical at Alpine crossings, which can greatly impact road transit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6082\" data-end=\"6233\">For goods not requiring fast delivery, intermodal transport can act as a <strong data-start=\"6155\" data-end=\"6177\">\u201cmoving warehouse\u201d<\/strong>, enabling <strong data-start=\"6188\" data-end=\"6232\">highly efficient supply chain management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6235\" data-end=\"6238\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"6240\" data-end=\"6359\"><strong data-start=\"6245\" data-end=\"6359\">8. What are the future prospects for intermodal transport? Additionally, <strong data-start=\"6801\" data-end=\"6824\">new loading systems<\/strong> will allow lifting of <strong data-start=\"6847\" data-end=\"6878\">non-craneable semi-trailers<\/strong>, which make up the majority of the current fleet\u2014representing a large potential market.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"6968\" data-end=\"6971\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"6973\" data-end=\"7080\"><strong data-start=\"6978\" data-end=\"7080\">9.
